How to Make Techno Top Kicks

A punchy techno kick, 100% from scratch, out of Serum. This really ties into rumble kicks, because based on the top kick you'll start to make those.

    My notes from this video

    01

    Two envelopes on the pitch

    Watch 0:44

First I take down the randomize knob, so the phase is always at the same point and the kick doesn't change sound. Envelope two goes to around 400 milliseconds, envelope three gets the same shape at around 100 milliseconds. Both go on the coarse pitch, so these two control the pitch of the whole kick. The first one needs to be longer, the second one more snappy.

Then I add a noise oscillator with the attack of a kick, on one shot. You can take any kick you like. I want one that's snappy and doesn't add a lot of character. It's just there to give a nice snap, because you need that tick in the beginning.

Serum ENV2 on the pitch of a hard techno top kick: attack 0.5 ms, hold 0.0 ms, decay 464 ms, sustain 0.00%, release 15 ms
Envelope two on the coarse pitch, decay at 464 ms.

    Inflator, clippers and EQ

    Watch 1:47

This is where you really make and break the kick. The first thing I add is an inflator. If you don't have one, an inflator is basically a half sine in the waveshaper. Then a soft clipper just in front of it, and an EQ where I control the sub, because that really makes a difference once we add clipping. Low pass to muffle the highs. That EQ goes in front of everything.

Then another soft clipper and Misstortion 2, which is free from Nimble Tools. Open the hard clipper, don't touch any other knob and don't make it clip too much. Then an EQ after it. Boost the sub, the mids a little bit and the highs where needed. The mids give a bit of character, the highs give it some air. Don't overdo it.

FL Studio inserts on a techno top kick: Fruity parametric EQ 2, soft clipper, Misstortion2, EQ 2, soft clipper, WaveShaper
The finished chain. The low pass EQ goes first, the soft clipper and the WaveShaper inflator go last.

Try it on a lower note

    Watch 3:09

Go back in your piano roll, place it on a different note and see if it gets better. I feel like D is too high. Then I go into my master channel, render the kick with Edison, trim the noise, normalize it and drag it into the playlist. Make it shorter and cut the end.

The tail is really low but the beginning is pretty high, and I don't think that will work in techno. So get it down a bit. My ears were deceiving me, I thought it sounded good in E or B, but it might sound better in a lower pitch. Let's try G.
