How to Make Raw Hard Techno Screeches in Vital

These very raw screeches you hear a lot nowadays in hard techno are very aggressive. Here's how you make them.

My notes from this Short

01

Few voices with a lot of detune

I start with a saw wave and immediately want a little bit of pitch automation, so I add envelope 2 to the transposition, on bipolar in the matrix and 24 semitones.

This sound really comes to life with minimal voices, 4 or 5, a lot of detune and the detune power at around 0. Then I add distortion on hard clip all the way. In Advanced I take down the stereo unison so it phases together in the distortion a bit nicer, and maybe increase the range slightly.

02

A steep digital band pass on an LFO

Now it really comes down to filtering. I use a band pass, and I really like the digital ones for these, with 24 dB so it's a bit more steep. The sweet spot is at around 800 to 2000 hertz, so LFO 1 can wobble around between that range.

Just make sure it's on sync seconds with no smoothing, so it moves around nicely.

Vital Filter 1 for a raw hard techno screech: a Digital 24 dB band pass with the cutoff at 928 Hz
The digital band pass on 24 dB, here with the cutoff at 928 Hz.
03

Lots of reverb and a bouncing delay

I add an EQ to remove the sub and add a bit of highs, then a single band compressor to make it more snappy, with a bit of makeup gain.

Finally you need a lot of reverb, so add more time and maybe increase the chorus amount a little bit. The delay I like best on stereo, 1/4 and 1/2 dotted, with a bit in the mids. This really makes it bounce around.
