How to Make an Industrial Techno Screech in Serum 2

Industrial hard techno screeches only need Serum 2, and once you know how to do this, it's easy to make them every time.

My notes from this Short

01

Detune with the width down

I start with a saw wave and immediately add envelope 2 to the coarse pitch to get a pitch effect. I add around eight voices, it doesn't really matter, and just a lot of detune.

It does matter to take down the width, so the voices can phase together better when we add a lot of distortion. Then add Zero Square, all the way.

02

Lorenz chaos on the coarse pitch

We can use LFO 1 on the Lorenz chaos mode and add that to the coarse pitch. I change it to hertz, times 10, to go even faster, and I can increase the amount if I have to. It makes it very screechy.

Then we just need a filter. Something like the Band 24 is a bit too raw for me, so I take down the mix to focus on the mids. I add envelope 2 to the cutoff so it moves down with the pitch.

03

A chaotic hall reverb and upwards compression

In the mixer we just need some very basic tweaking. Reduce the lows a little bit, add a normal delay, and reverb on hall mode with a high size, a lot of decay and a lot of spin rate, so the reverb is a bit more chaotic.

The icing on the cake is the compressor on multiband. Take down the downwards compression and open up the upwards compression with below. This adds a lot of brightness and that in your face character.
