How to Make a Detuned Hard Techno Screech in Vital

Those detuned hard techno screeches that you hear everywhere, here's how you make them in Vital.

My notes from this Short

01

16 voices and a detune range of 3

I start with a saw wave, add 16 voices and put the detune at 100%. In Advanced I change the detune range to around 3 to get even more detune, and change the stereo unison a little bit.

Then I go back and turn down the phase randomization to make it a bit more clicky.

02

A one-shot LFO for the click

I make LFO 1 very fast, change it to seconds so it's even faster, and set it to envelope so it only hits once. Add that to the pitch. This adds that click to the screech.

Envelope 1 goes on the pitch as well, but bipolar and going up 24. There's a bit of release which I don't like, so I take that down.

03

Single band compression for the attack

I add a little bit of soft clipping for more power, not too much. Then a compressor, not on multiband but single band, to add a bit more of that click attack.

Finally a delay on stereo, 1/4 and 1/4 dotted, focusing on the mids, and a bit of reverb if you like. Then go back and change the attack, the detune amounts, the unison and the detune range.
