How to Make Techno Percussion Loops From One Sample

I wish I knew this when I started making techno. I've been using this trick to create an infinite amount of techno percussion loops.

My notes from this Short

01

One percussion sample in the piano roll

I grab any percussion and make sure the ADSR is set to only play the sample while the note is playing.

Then I go into the piano roll and make a simple pattern at C5, and add a lower pattern that's also simple.

02

Faster layers with velocity

Now go higher and make a fast rhythm like a hi-hat. Play around with the velocity, duplicate it and create an even faster loop on top of it.

Put some space between the notes and add some melodic notes.

03

Low mid boost, distortion and OTT

Take it to the mixer and add an EQ with a boost around the low mids, distortion, OTT, saturation, an EQ to clean up the bass and muffle the highs, and some sidechain. Then add it to your kick.

Now just change the percussion and see what happens. You can also play around with the hold of the ADSR to change the length of each sample.
