How to Make Distorted Hard Techno Kicks

Fat and distorted hard techno kicks are easy. I grab a kick, add it to the mixer and put a channel next to it for reverb.

My notes from this Short

01

A reverb channel ducked by the top kick

In the reverb channel I add any reverb plugin and a Fruity Limiter, and automate the gain so the reverb gets sidechained to the top kick.

Then I remove the highs from the reverb channel and make sure the top kick and the reverb go into one channel, which is the final kick channel.

02

Mono sub into the inflator and soft clipper

On the final kick channel, first add Pro-Q 3 to make sure the sub is mono. Then an inflator and a soft clipper. Add some post gain, open the effect of the inflator, and finally add a lot of input volume.

FabFilter Pro-Q 3 on a distorted hard techno kick: a 72 dB/oct low cut on the side channel at 125 Hz, so the sub stays mono
Pro-Q 3 cuts the side below 125 Hz, so the sub stays mono.
03

EQ boosts in front for different kicks

You can go in front of this and boost some frequencies to get different kicks. You get a lot of variations, and it's easy to go overboard, but try it out.
