How to Get Full Control Over Techno Rumble Kicks in Serum 2

You can make techno rumbles only using Serum 2, and a lot of people don't know it. The upside is you get a lot of control over your rumble, compared to the more conventional method.

My notes from this Short

01

One Duda kick into a hall reverb

I change the oscillator to a sample and just use any of the Duda kicks. Disable pitch tracking so it stays in the same pitch.

In the effects I simply add reverb. Any of the modes work, but I like Hall with a low size, all the way, and a bit of decay.

02

Roll off the highs before saturating

First roll off the highs with an EQ, then a utility to make the bass mono, because we don't want any weird phasing in our low end. Then any distortion, but the best one is the soft saturator. Roll off the highs again, maybe add a soft clipper, and boost the lows a bit to add more low end.

Remember, changing frequencies in front of distortions really shapes the kick. So you can clean it up or open the highs a bit more.

03

Width, tone and an LFO on the volume

Then take down the volume and use an LFO with whatever blend you want to shape the volume. You can control the width by playing around with the frequency of the bass mono. This one is too phasey in the low end, but anything up to 150 is fine.

You can also control the tone by playing with the semitone of this kick.
