How to Fix Phase Issues in Techno Rumble Kicks

Phase issues are just the natural process of a rumble kick. If you make techno rumble kicks, you're meant to run into them.

My notes from this Short

01

Blend and reverb settings move the cancellations

In this setup I have the punch and the rumble on separate channels. First, change the blend between the punch and the rumble reverb channel, and notice how that changes the phasing in the kick.

Then change the settings of the reverb that makes the rumble. That changes the phase interference, and also where it gets cancelled out.

02

Clip the cancelled spots back up

Once you've found a spot that looks good and you don't have as many cancellations, pull the volume of those cancelled out spots up with a wave shaper, clipping, distortion or saturation. That fixes most of the issues.

03

Mono bass and a moving high pass

Make sure the bass frequencies are mono. Set a high pass on the side and create a crossover frequency at 250. This fixes a lot of issues.

And finally, a little bit controversial: move a high pass filter around between 20 and 40 hertz to phase shift the kick until it really gets into place.
