Quick tip

Four Tips to Improve Techno Rumble Kicks

Here are four tips to always improve your techno rumble kicks.

My notes from this Short

01

A mono sub, then inflator and clipper

First I make the sub mono, to make the mix cleaner. Then I add an inflator and open the effect, and add a soft clipper and squash the post gain until it starts clipping.

FabFilter Pro-Q 3 on a techno rumble kick: a 72 dB/oct low cut on the side at 275.75 Hz, so the sub stays mono
A steep low cut on the side at 275.75 Hz keeps the sub mono.
02

A high reverb channel in full stereo

Next to the low rumble I add a high reverb channel. On this one, remove the sub and the highs, and make the stereo separation 100% stereo. The kick now has more room.

03

Muffle the highs and distort again

The last tip: muffle the highs of the total kick, add more distortion, and bring back the good frequencies.
