How to Make a Techno Kick Rumble From Any Sample

You can make a techno kick rumble with any sample. To prove it, I'm using a hi-hat.

My notes from this Short

01

Stretch a hi-hat four octaves down

I pitch it down one octave, put it on stretch mode, set the pitch range to 48 and take it down four octaves. Then I add a lot of time so it's nicely stretched out.

FL Studio channel settings for a hi-hat turned into a techno kick rumble: pitch range 48, time stretching on Stretch mode, and the stretched-out hat in the playlist

02

Clean up the stretched sample

In the mixer, the first thing I do is remove the highs. Then I remove some low mids and add bass. It's clipping, so I add a soft clipper and an inflator.

Then I control the sub with a brick wall, stereo placement on side, so the sub is mono.

03

ValhallaRoom, sidechain and a top kick

I take ValhallaRoom and automate it, add some sidechain and add a top kick. Both go into one channel with another soft clipper and another inflator.

Go back to your rumble, add one more EQ and clean it up. If you boost the sub, you get crunch.
