How to Make a Melodic Techno Rolling Bass in Serum

How I create a melodic techno rolling bass in Serum, step by step.

My notes from this Short

01

A quarter note rhythm with space

I open Serum and create a quarter note rolling bass rhythm, with some space between each note.

02

Mono legato and a low filter

Take down the octave and add mono legato. Take envelope 1 down, envelope 2 the same way, and add some release on both envelopes.

Take the filter down to around 100 hertz, and add envelope 2 to it at around 30, so we're not messing with the highs.

Serum filter for a melodic techno rolling bass: an MG Low 12 low pass with envelope 2 on the cutoff at 30

03

No random phase for a clean bass

Take down the randomize knob on the phase, so you always have a clean bass. Add an EQ on bell mode and boost the sub, a compressor at around minus 20 dB, and a distortion on sine shaper.

Now you can create snappiness. Automate the cutoff and make it open up during parts of your drop.
