How to Make a Techno Kick Rumble Using Only Serum

This is how you make a techno kick rumble only using Serum, starting from the noise oscillator.

My notes from this Short

01

Start from the noise oscillator

I open Serum, disable oscillator A, open the noise oscillator, open the level and take down the pitch. Then I take a filter, enable the noise oscillator on it and take it down.

In the effects, add some tube distortion, and add an EQ to muffle the highs again.

02

LFO 1 on the multiband threshold

Add a compressor, put it on multiband and create LFO 1. Add LFO 1 inverse on the threshold. This is going to be a gain automator, so we've now sidechained the rumble.

Serum FX rack for a techno kick rumble: Tube distortion, a compressor with LFO 1 on the threshold at -55, an EQ, and the LFO 1 shape below
LFO 1 on the compressor threshold, inverted (-55). The LFO shape is the sidechain.
03

A plate reverb for the width

Finally, add a reverb in front of the compressor. Put it on plate so you can control the wideness, and open the mix.

You can now control the character with the pitch knob of the noise and the reverb settings.
